W „Życiu instrukcji obsługi” Georges Perec zaprasza nas do paryskiej kamienicy, po której pomieszczeniach poruszamy się wraz z nim ruchem skoczka szachowego, śledząc przy okazji losy jej osobliwych mieszkańców. Wiele się w tym budynku wydarzyło, wiele dzieje się na naszych oczach. Mimo oszałamiającej różnorodności zdarzeń, mimo nagromadzenia komicznych i tragicznych perypetii, przy lekturze których po prostu nie sposób się nudzić, nad wszystkim unosi się niepokojące widmo pustki. Nie, nie, Perec nie jest naiwny. Nie chce nam powiedzieć tego, co już wiemy – że na dwóch krańcach naszego życia jest nieistnienie. Próbuje uchwycić subtelną istotę pewnego stanu, który wszyscy znamy z własnego doświadczenia, a którego natura nieustannie się nam wymyka. Oto jednemu z bohaterów przychodzi do głowy, by całą życiową energię i większość finansowych środków, którymi dysponuje, wykorzystać w celu stworzenia wielokształtnego dzieła. Następnie zaś dochodzi do wniosku, że dzieło to należy unicestwić, usuwając każdy jego ślad. U Pereca pustka jest „wytwarzana”, u niego nicość się „robi”. Pytanie – nie jedyne, ale chyba najważniejsze – brzmi następująco: czy ktoś to powstrzyma, czy ktoś zdoła uniemożliwić realizację tego destrukcyjnego planu?

Georges Perec (ur. 7 marca 1936 w Paryżu, zm. 3 marca 1982 w Ivry-sur-Seine) – francuski prozaik, eseista i filmowiec żydowskiego pochodzenia, zaliczany do grona najważniejszych dwudziestowiecznych twórców literatury. Członek grupy OuLiPo. Jego rodzice zginęli w czasie II wojny światowej; wychowywała go ciotka. Ukończył historię i socjologię na Sorbonie. Kilka lat pracował jako nauczyciel w Tunisie, by w 1962 przyjąć posadę archiwisty jednego z paryskich szpitali. Zawód ten wykonywał do 1979 r. Zmarł na raka płuc w 1982. Ze względu na realizowaną przez Pereca koncepcję literatury, której fundamentem są formalne eksperymenty, niektóre z jego utworów mogą funkcjonować w zasadzie wyłącznie w języku francuskim. Mimo to był często tłumaczony na język polski. Do tej pory ukazały się: Rzeczy (tłum. A. Tatarkiewicz, trzy edycje, pierwsza: Książka i Wiedza, Warszawa 1982), Człowiek, który śpi(tłum. A. Wasilewska, dwie edycje, pierwsza: Prószyński i S-ka, Warszawa 2003), Gabinet kolekcjonera (dwie edycje w przekładzie odpowiednio M. P. Markowskiego i W. Brzozowskiego, pierwsza: Wydawnictwo KR, Warszawa 2003), Teatr I (tłum. J. Olczyk, Lokator, Kraków 2010), O sztuce oraz sposobach usidlenia kierownika działu w celu upomnienia się o podwyżkę (tłum. W. Brzozowski, W. A. B., Warszawa 2011), Urodziłem się (różni tłumacze, Lokator, Kraków 2012), Pamiętam że (tłum. K. Zabłocki, Lokator, Kraków 2013), W albo wspomnienie z dzieciństwa (tłum. W. Brzozowski, Lokator, Kraków 2014), Podróż zimowa (w tomie: Podróże zimowe, tłum. J. Giszczak, Lokator, Kraków 2016), Przestrzenie (tłum. A. Daniłowicz-Grudzińska, Lokator, Kraków 2019). Życie instrukcja obsługi, jego najważniejsze dzieło, po raz pierwszy ukazało się w Polsce w 2001 r. nakładem Fundacji Literatura Światowa.
