„NOTATKI NA MARGINESACH Księgi niepokoju spisanej przez Bernarda Soaresa, pomocnika księgowego w Lizbonie”
Marginesy owych stronic – w tym wypadku konkretnych stronic zapisanych ręką Pessoi – Piotr Kaliński pokrywa linorytami, dając nam do zrozumienia, że pisać można także obrazem, a pojęcie notatki odnosi się nie tylko do słowa, ale też do form wizualnych. Przepisuje – podobnie jak kopiści – kawałki istniejącego tekstu i dodaje do nich coś w rodzaju iluminacji lub ilustracji. Ale z założenia powiela wyłącznie fragmenty, pojedyncze sentencje. Przypomina w tym nieco Borgesowskiego Pierre’a Menarda, który z niemal trzech (przepisanych słowo w słowo) rozdziałów Cervantesowskiego „Don Kichota” tworzy „własną” powieść. Jak powiada Borges, Menard wzbogacił sztukę lektury o niezwykle inspirującą technikę zamierzonego anachronizmu i błędnej atrybucji, dzięki którym dawne teksty możemy czytać tak, jakby były nam współczesne, przenosić je w nowe konteksty, ożywiać je i poddawać się ich przemożnemu wpływowi.
To prawda, że bez dzieła Pessoi nie byłoby niniejszego notatnika, ale za sprawą wywrotowej praktyki celowego anachronizmu prawdziwe staje się również twierdzenie odwrotne: bez iluminacji Kalińskiego nad wieloma stronicami Pessoańskiej księgi zapadłby mrok. Czytając ją, skłonni jesteśmy przekładać słowa na obrazy. Od dziś będą to obrazy stworzone przez PIO.

Jeśli wierzyć Pessoi, autorowi „Księgi niepokoju”, notatki są prawdziwsze niż tekst, na który wskazują. Jeśli wierzyć słowom Grzegorza Jankowicza, autora wstępu do „Notatek na marginesach ‘Księgi niepokoju’”, obrazy Pio Kalińskiego do tekstu Pessoi są tylko w pewnym stopniu jego przepisaniem. PIO nadaje swoim notatkom formę graficzną. Książka, którą mamy w rękach, to zbiór grafik inspirowanych powieścią labiryntem lizbońskiego autora.
Jeśli wierzyć Jorge Luisowi Borgesowi, na którego zresztą powołuje się Jankowicz, nawet dokładne przepisanie tekstu (o ile w naszych rozważaniach jest ono możliwe) wprowadza go w nowy kontekst, sytuuje go gdzie indziej, bo odnosi go do wszystkich istniejących tekstów, również do pierwowzoru, i czyni z niego w ten sposób tekst nowy. Technika przepisywania, którą stosuje Pierre Menard z opowiadania Borgesa, jest nową jakością, choć starym (tym samym) tekstem.
Jeśli wierzyć PIO i jego lekturze „Księgi niepokoju” Pessoi, Pessoa boryka się z samotnością, melancholią, brakiem, niespełnieniem, spod których przeziera czasem nadzieja, że ten bezlitosny chaos jest do okiełznania przynajmniej w jakimś stopniu.
Jeśli wierzyć w cokolwiek, to w tekst. Również w ten rozumiany jako grafika.
