Pieniądz wznosił się między nimi jak przegroda. Jak mur, jak rodzaj buforu, o który wciąż się obijali. To było coś gorszego do nędzy: ciągłe braki, liczenie się z groszem, ciułanie. Żyli w zamkniętym świecie swego zamkniętego życia, bez przyszłości, bez widoków, prócz nierealnych cudów, niemądrych, bzdurnych mrzonek. Dusili się. Czuli, że idą pod wodę.

Opis

Rzeczy (fr. Les Choses. Une histoire des années soixante ) – debiutancka powieść Georges’a Pereca z 1965 roku, za którą otrzymał w tym samym roku Nagrodę Renaudot.

Rzeczy zostały pomyślane jako odyseja typowych przedstawicieli pokolenia, które wchodziło w dorosłość w latach 60. XX w., jako opowieść o straconej generacji, której przypadł w udziale trefny los.

Bohaterowie Pereca – Sylvie i Jerôme, niedoszli absolwenci uniwersytetu, najpierw ankieterzy agencji reklamowych, później ich właściciele, wydziedziczeni z tradycji, odcięci od przeszłości i pozostawieni samym sobie – nadaremnie szukają dostępu do upragnionego świata dobrobytu. Nie mogąc żyć życiem „prawdziwym” (lepszym, pełniejszym, bogatszym etc.), postanawiają (nieomal mimowolnie) żyć życiem na niby. Żyją tak jakby byli bogaci, tak jakby mogli się ubierać w najlepszych sklepach, tak jakby umieli korzystać z przyjemności, tak jakby naprawdę kochali życie, tak jakby ich egzystencja naprawdę była sztuką.

Kiedy w 1965 r. ukazały się debiutanckie Rzeczy Georges’a Pereca, ich autor, nieśmiały absolwent socjologii, liczył sobie lat 29 i zajmował podrzędną posadę archiwisty w bibliotece paryskiego szpitala. Przystępując do pisania tej krótkiej książki, w roku 1961, Perec miał już za sobą cztery nieopublikowane próby powieściowe. (Do dziś tylko jedna z nich doczekała się druku: odnaleziony niedawno Kondotier, którego polski przekład Marzeny Chrobak wydano przed rokiem). Czteroletni wysiłek sowicie się opłacił. Dzięki Rzeczom Perec stał się nie tylko „prawdziwym”, publikowanym pisarzem, lecz także, po wyróżnieniu prestiżową nagrodą Renaudot, pisarskim celebrytą. Skądinąd chwilowym, chociaż równie wielkiego, jeśli nie większego rozgłosu doczekał się dopiero po swym opus magnum, Życiu instrukcji obsługi z roku 1978. Italo Calvino nazwał tę książkę „ostatnim prawdziwym wydarzeniem w historii powieści”. Perec zmarł na raka płuc, dojmująco przedwcześnie, w 1982 roku, Calvino trzy lata później, lecz jego opinia, mimo wielu interesujących powieści, których nie miał szansy przeczytać, zdaje się w wciąż pozostawać w mocy.

Rzeczy. Historia z lat sześćdziesiątych (oryginalny podtytuł pojawił się bodaj dopiero w trzecim polskim wydaniu) to opowieść poniekąd pokoleniowa. Bohaterowie Pereca, Sylvie i Jerome, mogliby być jego rówieśnikami, podobnie jak on wykształconymi, niezamożnymi i poszukującymi miejsca w życiu. Różnica jest taka, że opisywana przez Pereca para uwiedziona jest nieposkromioną żądzą posiadania. Posiadania wszystkiego, co posiadać, jak im się zdaje, wypada, by żyć jak należy – i coraz bardziej sfrustrowanych niemożnością spełnienia swych pragnień. Czytano więc Rzeczy (i wciąż można je tak czytać) jako przenikliwą krytykę kapitalistycznego konsumpcjonizmu. Taka ich lektura odpowiada pewnie za rozgłos książki i natychmiastowe niemal przekłady. Co ciekawe, Perec miał wzięcie nie tylko na Zachodzie, lecz także za żelazną kurtyną, w czym udział miało zapewne zakończenie książki cytatem z Karola Marksa. Rzeczy przełożono na bułgarski, estoński, rosyjski, węgierski, rumuński, wydano je nawet w NRD. Przekład polski ukazał się w 1967 r., a we wstępie doń Anna Bukowska wskazywała zawarte u Pereca „ostrzeżenie przed nadmiernym zmaterializowaniem współczesnej cywilizacji, która tworząc warunki bogacenia się społeczeństw, jednocześnie duchowo wyjaławia je”.
