„Podobnie jak w przypadku innych wymyślonych przez siebie postaci, Pessoa podał szereg szczegółów na temat Reisa. Miał się on urodzić w Porto w 1887 roku, był więc o parę miesięcy starszy od swojego twórcy, a także – co dość dziwne, wziąwszy pod uwagę relację mistrza i ucznia – od Alberta Caeiro, który miał się rzekomo urodzić 16 kwietnia 1889 roku. Dokładnej daty urodzenia Reisa Pessoa – jak twierdził – nie pamiętał. Ale w jego zapiskach odnaleziono horoskop, opracowany na podstawie nie tylko dnia, ale i godziny narodzin: miał to być 19 listopada, pięć po czwartej po południu. Kolejnym paradoksem heteronima starszego od swojego twórcy było też to, że – jak twierdził Pessoa – Reis pisał po portugalsku poprawniej od niego samego.”

Powiało styksowym chłodem tylko dlatego, żeby tym razem klasycyzujący Fernando Pessoa mógł ukazać całą wieczność z jej przypływami i odpływami. Poezja heteronimów jak zwykle mnie zaskoczyła, słowa Ricarda Reisa roztoczyły wizję spokojnego trwania i dopomogły w głębszym poznaniu siebie samego. Ten stoik i spóźniony neoklasyk zachwala byt, którego celem nie jest zapieranie tchu. Szuka trwałości i ładu, przeprowadza syntezę epikureizmu i stoicyzmu w imię refleksyjnego spojrzenia na smakowanie przemijania.
