KSIĘGA NIEPOKOJU SPISANA PRZEZ BERNARDA SOARESA, POMOCNIKA KSIĘGOWEGO W LIZBONIE
Prezentowany poniżej przekład Księgi niepokoju oparty został na dziewiątym wydaniu Richarda Zenitha (2011). Tym samym wprowadza on istotne zmiany w odniesieniu do poprzedniego wydania Księgi w moim przekładzie (opartego na czwartym wydaniu Zenitha z 2003 roku), które ukazało się Warszawie w 2007. Poza tym, że tekst przeszedł nową redakcję w oparciu o nowy oryginał, został też poszerzony o wspomniane siedem fragmentów. Uwzględniono w nim także kilkaset zmian wynikłych z nowych odczytań rękopisów – w większości przypadków nadających zdaniu całkiem nowy sens – oraz usunięto część akapitów. Te z „wielkich fragmentów” (składających się na drugą część książki), które w poprzednich wydaniach nosiły jednakowe tytuły, a zróżnicowane były numerycznie, teraz zostały połączone w całości podzielone jedynie gwiazdkami. Na końcu umieszczono kilka szczątkowych tekstów (oznaczonych jako apendyksy), które Wydawca zidentyfikował jako nieukończone fragmenty Księgi niepokojulub/i wersje fragmentów istniejących. […]
Dokonane przez Richarda Zenitha drobiazgowe, bibliofilskie opracowanie Księgi zostało w polskim wydaniu zredukowane do niezbędnego minimum. Oryginał opatrzono w szczegółowe przypisy informujące między innymi o datach (datowanych fragmentów), o tym, czy dany fragment został napisany ręcznie, czy na maszynie, jak również o wszystkich wariantach poszczególnych słów i zdań. W przypisach do polskiego wydania pomijałem te kwestie, a w przypadku fragmentów pozostawionych w różnych wersjach wybierałem taką propozycję Autora, którą uznałem za najstosowniejszą.

Urodziłem się w czasach, kiedy większość młodych ludzi straciła wiarę w Boga, w ten sam sposób, w jaki ich rodzice ją mieli – nie wiedząc dlaczego. Potem zaś, ponieważ natura ludzka ma wrodzoną skłonność do oceniania świata poprzez to co czuje, a nie to co myśli, większość tych młodych ludzi zastąpiła Boga Ludzkością. Ale ja należę do tego typu osób, które znajdują się zawsze na krańcu tego, do czego należą i które dostrzegają nie tylko liczebność swojego środowiska, ale i wielkie przestrzenie leżące poza nim. Dlatego ani nie odrzuciłem Boga tak całkowicie jak oni, ani nie przejąłem się nigdy Ludzkością. Uważałem, że Bóg, chociaż nieprawdopodobny, mógłby istnieć, a w takim razie należy Go wielbić, natomiast Ludzkość, będąc zaledwie pewną biologiczną ideą, która określa nie więcej niż jeden ze zwierzęcych gatunków, nie zasługuje na większe uwielbienie niż jakikolwiek inny gatunek zwierząt. Ten kult humanizmu, ze swymi rytuałami Wolności i Równości, wydawał mi się zawsze wskrzeszeniem kultów starożytnych, w których zwierzęta były jak bogowie, a bogowie mieli zwierzęce głowy.
