Człowiek, który śpi jest powieścią jednowątkową. Perec, „nawiązując do pewnego szczególnego okresu w życiu”, opowiada historię – swoją własną historię – człowieka, który przerywa studia, wycofuje się z życia, wybija na margines, dobrowolnie zajmuje pozycję outsidera.  Zrywa istniejące więzi, unieważnia dotychczasowe parametry czasu i przestrzeni, własną egzystencję sprowadza do niezbędnego minimum, do kilku powtarzalnych gestów zapewniających przetrwanie. Popada w coraz większe zobojętnienie, doznaje uczucia całkowitego wyobcowania. Stopniowo pozbawia swoje istnienie jakiejkolwiek wagi. Życie wypełniają mu zajęcia bez znaczenia. Grywa samotnie w karty, stawia pasjanse, czyta „le Monde” linijka po linijce, godzinami wędruje po mieście, wchodzi do przypadkowych kin, „odwiedza muzea, bary, dworce, biblioteki publiczne”. Żyje w stanie zawieszenia. Wykonuje automatyczne czynności: myje się, goli, ubiera, śpi, je, pierze skarpetki. Powoli zatraca poczucie rzeczywistości. Daje unosić się życiu, dryfuje po jego powierzchni, wyzbyty poczucia hierarchii, oduczony jakichkolwiek upodobań. Wyzerowany. Egzystuje jak człowiek skazany na życie. Uczy się samotności, bierności, milczenia. Ulega iluzji, że można wymknąć się światu, „nie dając mu żadnego punktu zaczepienia”. Wreszcie, schwytany w pułapkę zwodniczego poczucia mocy, obezwładniony narastającą rozpaczą, powoli wydobywa się z odrętwienia, próbuje narzucić swej „chwiejnej egzystencji jarzmo nieugiętej dyscypliny”.
