Owo Bestiarium to ćwiczenia stylistyczne ujęte w formę dywagacji na temat nieznanych – i do końca wątpliwych – „stworów”. Przy czym punkt wyjścia stanowią często byty najzupełniej banalne, jak ziarnko tytoniu, ponury kelner, koń wyścigowy czy znak arytmetyczny. Zdarzają się też pająki, węże i ptaki niewiadomych gatunków, a także – o ile nie przede wszystkim – istoty bez reszty niewyobrażalne. Żywioł mowy, zadufanej w sobie a typowo francuskiej retoryki tudzież fałszywej erudycji, przekształca te skromne zarodki w istne fantasmagorie.
