In his famous essay, John Berger says that the art of photography has from the beginning existed in the utilitarian area in this area it was born, this area it has been trying to fill with new presentations and in this area it is dying in front of our eyes. The picture, belonging to the tradition – as old as the world – of optical illusion trompe-l’oeil, is entangled in a web of dependences which deprive it of its autonomy. The photographic presentation deludes us with its meticulous resemblance to reality. The obviousness of the world presented in the photograph is so great that, so to say, automatically, we begin to treat the photography as a model of realistic representation. And this inevitably leads to disautonomization of our medium. Meanings and contexts appear, and so does a modal frame, which obscures the picture itself. […]
